Why Types of Indian Granite Matter Before You Buy?

A builder in Panchkula once told me he spends more time explaining granite varieties to clients than he does on anything else in a project. Everyone arrives having seen one or two options online, convinced they know what they want. Then they see the actual range and realise they were choosing between two things when there were twelve.

India is one of the largest granite producers in the world. Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu – these states between them supply a significant portion of what gets laid in homes and exported globally. The varieties coming out of these quarries differ dramatically in colour, grain pattern, hardness, and price. Choosing the wrong one for the wrong application is a mistake that costs money and cannot be easily undone once the stone is laid.

This guide covers every major type available in the Indian market – where it comes from, what it looks like, where it works, and what it costs. Browse KMG granite collection

Types of Indian Granite - Complete Variety Guide

Types of Indian Granite: The Complete List

1. Black Galaxy Granite

Quarry origin: Andhra Pradesh

Deep black base with gold and copper speckles – the speckles are crystite crystals and bronzite minerals, not added colour. No two slabs are identical in speckle density. Finishes available: polished, honed. Best for: premium kitchen countertops, feature floors, bathroom vanity tops, hospitality interiors. Not ideal for outdoor use – the polished finish becomes slippery when wet.

2. Kashmir White Granite

Quarry origin: Andhra Pradesh

White to off-white base with grey and burgundy veining. One of the more elegant-looking Indian granites – people often mistake it for marble at first glance, which is partly why it sells well. Harder and less porous than any marble, though. Finishes available: polished, honed. Best for: upscale interior flooring, kitchen countertops, bathroom vanity tops, wall cladding in living spaces.

3. Absolute Black Granite

Quarry origin: Andhra Pradesh

Jet black, no variation, no speckle. The most uniform black stone available in Indian granite. What you see in one corner of the slab is what you see everywhere else. That consistency is exactly why it is chosen for commercial flooring, staircases, and monuments – it looks the same at scale. Finishes available: polished, honed, flamed (for outdoor use). Best for: commercial floors, staircases, steps, monuments, exterior cladding.

4. Indian Juparana Granite

Quarry origin: Rajasthan and Karnataka

Beige and peach base with a flowing wave pattern – the name Juparana comes from a Portuguese word meaning aged or weathered, and the stone does have that quality. Each slab reads as movement rather than pattern. Strong export demand, particularly to European markets. Finishes available: polished, honed, brushed. Best for: interior flooring, wall cladding, elevation work, export projects.

5. Rosy Pink Granite

Quarry origin: Tamil Nadu

Pink to deep red tones with a consistent grain. One of Tamil Nadu’s most quarried varieties. The colour holds well over time – it does not fade with light exposure the way some manufactured materials do. Finishes available: polished, honed, flamed. Best for: interior flooring, staircases, wall panels, decorative applications.

6. Steel Grey Granite

Quarry origin: Andhra Pradesh

Charcoal grey with fine, consistent grain. One of the most versatile Indian granites because the neutral colour works with almost any interior palette and the stone performs well across applications. Flamed finish opens it up for outdoor use without losing the look. Finishes available: polished, honed, flamed, brushed. Best for: interior and exterior flooring, kitchen countertops, landscaping, steps.

7. Rajasthan Black Granite

Quarry origin: Rajasthan

Dark grey to black, distinct from Absolute Black in that it shows some natural variation in tone. Less uniform but still a serious, heavyweight stone. Finishes available: polished, honed, flamed. Best for: floor tiles, monument work, exterior steps, boundary walls.

8. Tan Brown Granite

Quarry origin: Andhra Pradesh

Brown and burgundy base with black specks and occasional crystal flecks. Warm tones make it work well in kitchens and dining areas where you want the floor or counter to feel lived-in rather than clinical. Finishes available: polished, honed. Best for: kitchen countertops, interior flooring, bathroom vanity tops.

9. Ivory Brown Granite

Quarry origin: Karnataka

Warm beige with soft brown toning and low variation across the slab. A quieter stone – it does not demand attention, which makes it easy to work into most interiors without clashing with anything. Finishes available: polished, honed. Best for: interior floors, vanity tops, residential wall cladding.

10. Colonial White Granite

Quarry origin: Karnataka

White base with grey patches and occasional dark mineral deposits. Cleaner and more consistent than Kashmir White – less veining, more of an even spread. Works particularly well in bathrooms where you want light without visual noise. Finishes available: polished, honed. Best for: kitchen countertops, bathroom vanity tops, interior wall cladding.

11. P White Granite

Quarry origin: Rajasthan

Near-pure white with minimal variation. One of the cleaner whites available in Indian granite – less movement than Kashmir White, less patchiness than Colonial White. Chosen when the design calls for white stone and very little else to distract. Finishes available: polished, honed. Best for: premium interior floors, wall applications, feature surfaces.

12. Multi Red Granite

Quarry origin: Various states

Red dominant with mixed pink, grey, and black toning across the slab. High variation – no two slabs match closely, which either works for you or it does not. Best used decoratively rather than across large uniform areas. Finishes available: polished, honed, flamed. Best for: decorative interior flooring, feature walls, outdoor landscaping.

Types of Indian Granite By Quarry Region: Where Does Each Come From ?

  1. Rajasthan – India’s largest granite-producing state by volume. Supplies a wide variety – from Juparana to P White to Rajasthan Black – and has a well-established export infrastructure. Prices from Rajasthan quarries tend to be competitive because transport to major ports is efficient and processing facilities are mature.
  2. Karnataka – Produces some of the more premium varieties – Ivory Brown, Colonial White – and supplies heavily to South Indian construction as well as international markets. Bengaluru is a major processing hub for Karnataka granite.
  3. Andhra Pradesh – Where the most internationally recognised Indian granites come from. Black Galaxy, Absolute Black, Steel Grey, Kashmir White, Tan Brown – this state produces varieties that export across Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Ongole and Khammam districts are among the most active quarrying areas.
  4. Tamil Nadu – The primary source for Rosy Pink and related varieties. Significant quarrying activity in the southern districts supplies both domestic and export markets.

How To Choose The Right Type of Indian Granite For Your Project ?

Step 1 – Define your application first. Countertop, indoor floor, outdoor floor, elevation, staircase – the use determines which varieties are even in the running. Polished Black Galaxy on an outdoor staircase is a safety issue. Rosy Pink on a kitchen counter is a mismatch in tone for most kitchens. Start with where it is going before you think about anything else.

Step 2 – Set your budget range. Economy, standard, or premium. This is not about cutting corners – it is about not eliminating half your options before you have seen them. Rosy Pink and Multi Red deliver serious performance at economy pricing. Black Galaxy and Kashmir White are premium for a reason. Know where you sit before you walk into a showroom.

Step 3 – Think about the room’s colour scheme. Granite should work with what is already there or planned – wall colour, cabinetry, furniture tone. A warm room with wooden furniture reads differently with Tan Brown underfoot than with Steel Grey. This sounds obvious but it is the step most people skip.

Step 4 – Match the finish to the environment. Polished for indoor, dry surfaces. Honed for a matte indoor look that is slightly more forgiving. Flamed or brushed for anything outdoor or wet – it gives grip without sacrificing the look of natural stone.

Step 5 – See physical samples before you order. Photos lie. Especially for speckled varieties like Black Galaxy where slab density varies significantly. The sample you see on a screen may not match what arrives. If you are buying any significant quantity, get a sample to your site and look at it in the actual light conditions of the space.
